Saturday March 16.
Saturday... finally Saturday. The week went by so quickly, but being at work for nearly 12 hours a day takes it out of you. Though instead of doing nothing on Saturday, I decided to adventure out. I headed to Namdaemum Market. I just walked around it for several hours. Many of the boots have and sell the same things, but it incredible the number of people and the number of the stores there. The only things I purchased were food. One was some kind of dessert the guy was making. He spoke English to me, so that was enough to make me decide to buy from him. He made an effort. It was called gungjung tarae. reminded me a little of cotton candy. It is honey stretched into hair thin strands. The ones I ate had chocolate in the middle. So he gets some chocolate and wraps the strands around it. The second thing I had was a stick with fried stuff on it. I took a picture and I will post the picture in my next post. It had what tasted like crab, squid, and hotdog... delicious...
I then proceeded to walk around Seoul a little more. Just seeing the sites. Well I ended up by the Seodaemum subway stop. I knew this stop... There was a K Drama that I watched when I was still in the states called City Hunter. Well, there was an apartment that was used in the show (Kim NaNa's apartment), and I wanted to see it, cause it looked awesome. I found it on Google, so I wanted to make a point to go see it. I end up at the stop by it... so I decide to trek and find it. It required a lot of walking up hill... But I got up there and took a picture. I may go back and try to climb up it. It looks to be abandoned. The location would be fantastic for someone to rebuild. It is the top of a mountain.
I get home and I am worn out. I send a few emails, and watch a movie called Safety not Guaranteed. I saw in NY, and liked it, so I watched it again. I just had a sandwich and some cheese bread from my bakery a block away.
My refrigerator either freezes or is off, so buying any long term food is out of the question...
Sunday, March 17th.
St. Patrick's Day. I wore green. Not many people out here were. I went to church with Rachel. Interesting and different experience. It was far more Korean than any of the other ones I have been to... though the pastor was black. Interesting mix. The band sounded interesting to say the least. The church has 2 buildings. Without Rachel, I would have been lost, cause she was able to communicate with the people to find out where the service was going to be. They did not even know. We went to the 3rd, then the 5th, finally found out it was on the 4th. But we were really early. In the other building they were having food. Korean food. So we ate. Its hard to turn down free food. Well over there, there were kids... Just like everywhere else. Kids love me. There was this one girl that just loved me (prob 3 years). In korean she said I looked like a movie star. All the English she knew was hi. But she just talked to me and followed me around. When we got into the elevator, she grabbed my hand and led me in. Then there were little boys that could just say Hello, so every few minutes they came to me and said Hello. The food was good. There was one lady that was leading Rachel and I around, and bought us coffee. We went back to the other building. Service had very few people. I think partially cause it was St. Paddys, and Rachel said there was another service going on in the other building. I really kind of dug it though... Also starting next month, they will have Korean lessons after service. So we'll see.
We walked through a market afterward. Walking through a market with a Korean is much different than going about it on my own. She was telling me about all of the foods, what they were... so it was pretty great. After the market, we were walking and we passed a cell phone place. One of the guys that was handing out flyers spoke to me in broken English. He was very excited when I responded. Another cellphone place had a person on stilts that also tried talking to me. It is fun to see people get excited when you speak to them back in English. Rachel said her boyfriend has a good friend that owns a cellphone store. She will put me in touch with her. She also speaks English, so we are thinking it might be easier for me to get a cell phone that way, and find out the best and most cost effective service.
We then went our separate ways. I went to emart then homeplus. There are things I am starting to want to buy (a small table for next to my bed, dishes, real coffee, curtains, bathmat, another pillow) but I still do not get paid for 3 more weeks. So I'm still walking on a tight budget.
I was going to go to costco tonight and signup (cheap prices, bulk food items). but it was raining... So I just stayed in.
New week of school starts in 11 hours....
